Artofactory is a collection of wearable sculptures, designed by me, Eghan Thompson. I've been a sculptor for about two decades, and have made jewelry in some form for most of that time.
This is jewelry handmade from machine parts. These parts are currently used in many ways, industrial robotics, aerospace, motorcycle racing, food manufacturing, bicycles, cars, blenders, just about anything mechanical.
The Artofactory project is born of a desire to make things pleasing and meaningful to wear. Art that embraces both aesthetics and values. If there can be a culture that inspires innovation, for the sake of the common good, perhaps fashion has a role to play in driving us in the right direction. Free of gold, silver, or mined stones, hand crafted from industrial parts, the efficiency of the pieces you see here is extreme, and each part was once invented, and improved upon, and reinvented, and then re-imagined. As to perhaps we can re-imagine our futures.
Artofactory is based in North East Portland, Oregon. It's very wet and gray here, plenty of time for designing and making.
Hopefully jewelry can inspire us to revere innovators, to celebrate countless efforts to make our lives better by making better tools and machines. I also hope that my example of using up-cycled parts inspires others to craft in a sustainable way.
